Golden Retriever
Thought to have stemmed from the initial crossing of a yellow wavy-coated retriever with a spaniel, before mating on with setters and other retrievers, these dogs were first known as Retriever (Golden or Yellow), but in 1920 assumed their present name. One of the most versatile of breeds, and also one of the most popular, the Golden Retriever is used to retriever game in the field, for detecting drugs and explosive, as a tracker and guide dog - and last but not least as a favorite family pet.
The head has a broad skull with a powerful, wide and deep muzzle. The nose should be black, and the eyes are dark brown and have a kindly expression. Ears are moderately large and hang flat to the head. A clean, muscular neck is carried on a shortish body with deep ribs. The legs are fairly long and well-boned, terminating in round, cat-link feet. The muscular tail is carried level with the back; it is used for steering when swimming.
The coat can be flat or wavy but well-feathered; the undercoat is dense and water-resistant. Colour may be any shade of cream or gold.
An intelligent dog that is easy to train. The breed is of a confident, friendly and patient temperament and makes an enthusiastic pet - wagging its tail with vigour to express its pleasure.
